Does the T3 focus quickly in dimly lit rooms?

I have a brother moving up from point-&-shoot and looking at a T3 deal for $300.  He will be mostly photographing his baby and young children in ambient light, and his concerns are having good image quality in low light, and decently fast click-to-capture speed owing to youngsters not holding still for long.  So, is this model considered fast in this day and age?

I'm comparing it against an very slightly more expensive NEX-3N, which I know has outstanding image quality and I figure is a better camera in general, but I don't know if it's as fast to autofocus or acceptably fast, and this is an important consideration for them.  Any input is appreciated.

Canon EOS 1100D (EOS Rebel T3 / EOS Kiss X50) Sony Alpha NEX-3N
