The question was not addressed to me, but I would guess approx. 10,000.

Fascinating. Where did your data come from?

thom hogan I think is were i first heard it but here are confirmed production numbers for all nikon lens

500/4 D IF-ED II only 470 of this one. but 5830 of the newer version of it course thats 2007 to date!!!!

Yes, but do the math with the sales prices -- you're well into seven figures (if not eight) in annual revenues with each of these big lenses. Materials costs are negligible at that point, what you're doing is trying to recoup your R&D and engineering costs. How much does it cost to design and tool for a 400mm f/2.8 lens? No clue. More than USD 1 million? I highly doubt it. But yes, if you go out and make the DA 560 and it bombs and you've invested 500,000 or more in development and production and you only sell 100 copies at 8000, then yes you could be losing considerable cash at that point. I'm guessing about the numbers though.

Matt

In the one example they sold 2000 lens in 8 years, how many people you think it takes to make a lens? Engineering? Cost of materials is minimal? How on earth do you figure that? You might want to rethink your assessment

Nope, I absolutely will not, because I was just guessing in the first place. Obviously developing a lens won't be cheap. But it can't cost hundreds of millions, otherwise how would they be able to afford to do it? And when I say materials is minimal, I mean as a share of total costs. I'd expect R&D, design, and tooling to be much more significant at those volumes.

Could be wrong, just conjecture.
