If you want best indoor photo quality with no flash, then think lenses before bodies - probably a 30-35mm f/2 or f/1.8 in whichever system you're looking at.

Pentax and the other camera makers using Sony sensors (Nikon, Sony) also have approximately 2/3rds of a stop advantage at high ISO ... assuming there is no mirror in front of the sensor (some Sony cams). Nikon's recent Toshiba-sourced sensors perform just as well as the Sony sensors.

However a 50mm f/1.8 or a 35mm f/2 will give you 4-5 stops better performance in low light than the kit lens ... so I'd honestly invest there first ... even if it means keeping the XT for a while longer.

Finally, don't be afraid of bounce flash - which can look very good. A professor Kobre's lightscoop is an inexpensive way to get this, or you can get an inexpensive tilt/swivel flash. It will transform your indoor photography more than a new body or a lens.

That being said, the XT is indeed long in the tooth, and any new body will be much easier to use in low light than the XT is ... its just that there are a few other investments I'd make first in your shoes.
