Which upgrade from Rebel XT?

I've been shooting on a Rebel XT for the past 7 years, and would like to upgrade. I could use some advice, after reading endless amounts of reviews. I mainly shoot family shots, portraits, lots of indoor with no flash, and vacation photos/landscapes. I know my way around a DSLR well, and mainly shoot in manual.

First, a general question: is it a better decision to upgrade to new body w/ kit lens, or spend a similar amount of money upgrading just to a new lens for the Rebel XT (ie, Tamron 28-75mm, ~$500)?

If the former, I've been leaning towards the t4i, but now the T5i with the 18-55mm STM lens is basically the same price or cheaper. That is at the upper end of my budget right now (~$720).

I'm also considering a Pentax K-50. Fewer bells and whistles, less expensive, but really I just want the best quality photo possible (especially indoor, w/ no flash).

I'd love to get any feedback on this, or any other cameras/lenses in the $500-$700 range.

Thank you!
