6D Output Points Worthless?

I'm having a lot of trouble using the outer points on my Canon 6D.  The center point seems to do very well.

Both of these shots were taken from the same position using a flash at F5.6 on a 24-70 F2.8 II @ 70mm.  The focus point in each image was positioned over the eye.

As you can see the center point nails the focus and the outer point misses it badly.  Neither I or the subject was moving.

Do I need to use focus and recompose instead, dealing with the inaccuracies involved there?  Purchase a 5D III?  I'd rather not buy the 5D III just for this as I love everything else about the 6D, but I'm really getting tired of out of focus images when using anything other than the center point.

I have confirmed that my lens is sharp to the edges, so this is not a lens sharpness issue.
