Aside from weight would there be much difference between the k-01 with da 21mm lens vs the ricoh gr? I was thinking about the gr but saw a da21 for 295.00 on ebay and got it instead.

Go for the k01.

I somply think, that it is the better camera.

The Ricoh is smaller, which is the primary advantage. But your K-01 is much more versatile. You've got the DA21 now (great combo), and you can carry the tiny DA40 in your pocket and have a very capable kit.

Guys, pretty much what I figured, but then I got to thinking that maybe the ricoh lens would be better than the da21. However that's probably not the case and I do have the da40, also.

I have the 20mm f/2.8 KA that with my K-01 is just okay. And I doubt that the 21mm is better than the kA twenty.

A useful comparison showing the clear superiority of the 18mm GR:

As that focal length is my favorite, I think that the best choice is to buy the GR, which is only slightly more expensive than the 21mm alone.

On the other hand the couple K-01/DA 35mm macro is terrific!

X100:
  • Is cheaper than the K01 + DA21 combo
  • X100 lens is sharp and is almost 3 stops faster than DA21
  • Has lightning fast AF (after the latest FW upgrade a couple of months ago). Works great in low light too
  • Has the best in the world HSS fill-in flash
  • Built in ND filter (handy when shooting F2.0 in a bright sunny day)
  • Absolutely quiet, you can't hear its shutter from 1m
GR is definitely sharper than X100 and it has a better sensor, however:
  • 18mm lens is too wide for my needs (YMMV)
  • The lens is 2 stops slower than X100
  • I think I've read that it has a slower AF which struggles in low light
  • Expensive (compared to X100)

Gr is just a flat out better package than the k01 + 21mm. I own both (and love the k01). The gr focuses faster and more accurately, the lens is a better (totally subjective) focal length, is better corrected, is sharper and the sensor dr is at least equal to the k01 though color signature is totally different natively. That said, there's something to be said for system cohesion and the 21mm is a fun lens to use.

I have a GR and a K-01 + DA21. The GR wins hands down for sharpness and sheer having-a-camera-when-you-need-it-ness. Unless you have other lenses/uses for a K-01, I would recommend the GR. It's not perfect but it's pretty darned good and it fits in a pocket.

Can the flash of x100 be turned off?

I have been often asked by people in meusums to help them to shut off flash on their dc.

Sure, you can :).

There is also a dedicated "silent mode", which allows users to disable the flash, all the sounds and AF assist light with a single press on a button. Combined with the almost silent shutter this gives you a truly stealth shooting experience.

I have a K5ii and own or have owned all the DA Limiteds (including the DA21) and the FA Limiteds. I just got a GR a few days ago and I must say I am amazed at the image quality from this camera. The GR give me sharper photos than any pentax glass I have used with the K5, hands down. I think part of this is the mirrorless design and the leaf shutter and part is the outstanding lens. Due to its mirrorless design, the K-01 seems to get sharper images with the same glass than Pentax's mirrored cameras, but I would be very suprised if the K-01 + DA21 can match the GR for sharp images. The GR is sharper than the Fuji X100s from the comparisons I have seen.

The K-01 will handle better IMO and be more flexible as it can mount any K mount or M42 (via an adaptor) lens. The GR is so small it can slip into a pocket and you could carry it all day and not notice it. As such I find the GR to be the ideal second camera but I would not want it to be my only camera.

I want to thank all for your input. I ask this question late in the game since I had a k-01 and saw what I thought was a good deal, $300.00, for the da21. As soon as I ordered it I started having thoughts that I may have made a mistake and that may well be the case from what I read. However it may also be a compromise I can live with, but if not I think I can get my money back and will buy a GR. Thanks again to all.

I'm going to offer a different opinion, having a K-01 with the 40mmXS and a GR.

While the GR is without a doubt produces a sharper image, I often find the the K-01's white balance, metering, and processing produces a more pleasing, if softer image. I also find it that it produces better images at high ISO such as 3200, and at that ISO would often choose a faster shutter speed given the same ISO and aperture, with the caveat that the K-01 was at 40mm (60mm equiv) and the GR at 18.3mm (28mm equiv).

If money's no problem, the ricoh should be much better.
Sharper lens.
Faster lens.
Less distorted lens.
No aa filter.
Snap focus.
Ergonomics.
Size/weight you mentioned, but don't underestimate the value of these factors. The camera really CAN fit in your pants pocket!

I have the grd iv, but am planning to buy the gr some time in the new year.

If camera size isn't your #1 priority I don't think you'll benefit at all from the gr at that price. Enjoy your new lens, it's to my mind one of the best, all things considered.

I have played with the GR and I do want it. However, the K-01 + DA21 should be a great combination. You can get a tiny bag that fits those items + DA40mm XS, and feel happy to have versatile and powerful package, yet still very light.

That's a great price for the DA21. I bought mine five years ago, back when I had a 6mp body. Now I'm using it with a 16mp body, and soon perhaps 24mp. If I had bought a 6mp equivalent to the GR five years ago, I'm not sure I would still be using it. The GR is a nice camera, but lenses are a much better investment, IMO.

Gary,

With the optical quality of GR's lens, the camera is almost free!

How do you get 3 stops faster?!?!?!?!? its 1 1/3rd stop faster
  • Has lightning fast AF (after the latest FW upgrade a couple of months ago). Works great in low light too

  • The lens is 2 stops slower than X100
Again... you really need to re-learn your stops, its only 1 stop slower!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I think I've read that it has a slower AF which struggles in low light
  • Expensive (compared to X100)
