I think the tail is overexposed due to the background (ground here) which seems dark. In that case, generally the auto exposure tends to compensate, overexposing the pict Better light could have helped in that case but exposing for highlight (-2ev for exemple) could help too I think.

Spot measuring on the tail (when the camera has one) can work too but in that case it is very not easy (not much of the tail in the viewfinder
