Canon T1i suddenly focusing on the wrong spot

Hi all,

I've had a T1i for about 4 years now, and have shot tens of thousands of photos. All of a sudden, there seems to be a failure of the auto-focus system. I usually use the center-focus spot, and suddenly the camera is focusing on objects that appear above that spot. I've experimented with other focus spots and it seems that the camera is missing the focus spot entirely and is focusing elsewhere, usually above the spot.

I've experimented with several lenses, and this is consistently the case. If I use manual focus or Live View, I can get sharp photos, but the auto-focus is all wrong.

Does this happen over time? Is there anything I can do myself to correct this?   I'm currently abroad and can't easily send the camera in to be checked (and I've been thinking about getting a 70D or 6D anyway). But has anyone else seen a sudden failure of the auto-focus like this?  A bad time for this to happen, right during all our holiday celebrations!

Thank you for any advice or assistance.
