Yeah I know a7 has no built in flash. But hear me out. When using flash with nex7 whether internal or external flash tends to overexpose most of the time by quite a bit. Especially with Sony flashes. With my metz 58 af 2 tends to underexpose. But with the metz, setting the flash exposure to +2.3 correction gives consistent results.

With the A7, using the hvl 60 yields consistently well exposed shots. Have to say I'm very happy with this improvement.

Noticed the same with my A7R. Both the Sony HVL-F43AM and Metz 58 AF-2 expose much with TTL better than the Nex-7 does. Have not basically touched Flash Exposure compensation at all with the A7R, whereas with Nex-7 I was constantly adjusting it to avoid burning details with overexposure. Flash WB looks better to my eye too.

I'm generally a hobbyist so i don't use it intense enough to get it to overheat

Aha, I bet someone in this thread has some advice to give!

Currently I have nothing but manual flashes and accessory wireless triggers; I'd like to get one TTL capable flash to use occasionally on-camera for run and gun situations, and as part of the fleet (so it needs decent on-flash manual controls too).

Any thoughts on which way to go, Sony or Metz or are there others?

I also see a pretty consistent overexposure of maybe 1 or 2 stops with the NEX-7 and my bigger Metz 58 II but have no such issue using my smaller Metz 36 which I specifically purchased for use with the NEX-7 given that the 36 is small and compact whereas the larger Metz 58 is way too big for comfortable use / balance/ mounting on the NEX.
