I agree with Brian. Those who have used long zoom lenses, stabilized and unstabilized, seem to prefer the stabilized lens. For me, It's more enjoyable to shoot with. Whether or not it's better than in camera IS, I wouldn't know. Results from my shooting have been fine with both stabilization systems. It would be nice to have the choice.
