My only suggestion is to determine how useful a somewhat expensive manual lens might be to you. You are probably going to pay around 200$ for one. At 1.4 and even 2.0, any lens is tough to manually focus accurately as DOF is thin. Probably better for static subjects but not kids. When you nail the focus at 1.4, its very special. But in general use, i find it a little tight indoors and I'm more of an autofocus type person but I'm trying to practice to get better at manual focusing.

Ordered one on ebay for just over $200 inc. shipping. Should be here in a week, can't wait to try it.

Will post an update when I get it.

p.s. also looking at the 100m/f3.5 version... seems a very nice lens, although it could be a little faster given the focal length.

As long as it's in good shape, that's a pretty fair price for one.  That's about what I paid for mine.  I ended up getting the 100mm 3.5 but sold that lens.  It was pretty sharp wide open and would have made a decent long portrait lens (somewhat low contrast).  If it's a useful focal length for you, it's a great lens for the price.  I already have a 100 macro lens and the sel  55-210.

On another note, I quickly tested wide open performance between the 40mm and the Canon 50mm 1.4 SSC.  The Pen was definitely sharper in the center and does not have the dreamy highlights of the canon.  In practice though, I find both lenses very difficult to focus by using focus peaking alone, especially on people's eyes.  The DOF is just so small.  I do like that the Canon has half stop aperture clicks although you can kinda just set the pen in the middle if you are careful not to bump the aperture ring.
