Metering malfunction on XSI?

The metering on my Canon 450D has been spazzing out on me lately.  Can anyone give me any clues as to what might be the problem?  I'll be composing a pic, eye to (covering) the viewfinder, no changes in light, trained on a specific scene, finger on the shutter... and the meter will be jumping up and down like a mexican jumping bean, from over to under-exposed ranges.  Also noticed an odd backwards issue once in awhile.  The meter will show I'm underexposing a photo  -- yet it will turn out brighter.  Or will be overexposing yet get a darker photo.  I've had the camera for 2 years now (bought used), and never had this issue before recently.   Good thing I have a good sense of exposure, I've stopped relying on the camera meter and use my own judgment to set shuttter speed/aperature.  Does anyone know what kind of a malfunction this could be?  Thanks.
