a light body- that's what I want. People fail to realize how very strong the composites that are used are. I do not want a camera made of steel. I will take "space age" composites with a magnesium alloy frame any day. lighter is better For me.

You won't find "space age" composites in the Df. It's pretty simple plastic.

I can tell you with a great deal of confidence that a mag alloy chassis is much stronger than mag plated plastic (especially for knocks to the lens mount).

Please, take a look at bobn2's comment on frame materials at the bottom of this post:

My knowledge on material characteristics tell me that plastic inherently has better elasticity than metal, even though resistance to initial deformation is lower. But this is certainly not my area of expertise.

Ok, so this is an area of my expertise and I'm quite sure the claims that the D800 being more prone to failure is incorrect. Yes, the Mag alloy will tend to have brittle failure characteristics and the plastic will show much more plastic deformation. However, the plastic will still reach brittle failure at a (much) lower impact energy than the magnesium alloy.

The D800 may have been made for those guys  walking the sidelines at NFL games with 3 or 4 bodies, each with a 400 - 600mm lens attached, banging together and they run up and down the side lines. A person with IQ above 50 should know from just a picture, no specs needed, that the DF was not designed for this job..
