I've been looking at some reviews of the Zeiss lenses, 85 and 135, the question is, is it worth getting one over the Nikon 85 or 70-200?

It seems there is not much at all in it, maybe years ago there was more of a difference?

My opinion...

Is the Zeiss 85 worth it over the Nikon 85' Not one of Zeiss's better performers. Nikon 85 f1.8G is an excellent lens at any $500 ?!...phenomenal. Wanna pay 3x more for better build and *arguably* 5% better performance? Knock yourself out with the 85 f1.4G. Actually at f2, 1.8G is a bit better than the f1.4G.

Zeiss 100 f2 is better than either of the Nikon 85's, but no AF obviously. I own both...Zeiss 100 f2 + f1.8G. Sold my 85 f1.4G.

Zeiss 135 APO is the second best lens Zeiss makes (Zeiss 55 f1.4 Otus is #1). Definitely better in every *IQ parameter* than the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 or Nikon's 85's.

That said, if you're building a lens kit from scratch, I would start with:

Sigma 35 f1.4 ART, Nikon 85 f1.8G & Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC.  Zeiss are "specialty" lenses, start with "workhorses". UWA? Samyang 14mm.
