pentax k5 for example has several ( 'normal", "dof prioritization", etc) and pressing that button on it simply meters to specific "program line" you select.

It's only one possible use of the green button in M mode...

No, they don't.

you simply tweak shutter speed/aperture/iso and you watch that meter scale on the bottom of your lcd screen and - depending on how experienced you are with camera - hit 'zero" ( I normally underexpose because retrieving lost shadows in pp is much easier, than retrieving overexposed highlights- if possible at all). also I love my little placticky nx1000 because it gives me instant preview of exposure on the screen so I don't have to waste time reading histograms like I do on my k5
