Re: Canon T3 with 18-55 DC lens as a gift for a beginner?

If you can swing it, I would suggest to go for the IS lens. I learned on a T3 (my first dslr) and 18-55 IS lens and I am glad I got the IS. Starting out they will need the stability in the lens. The T3 will be a good learning camera. If they do not understand photography if would be good to get the book http://www.amazon.com/David-Buschs-Canon-Digital-Photography/dp/143546026X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1385331121&sr=8-2&keywords=t3+book. It was a great help for me to understand the camera, lens and photography in general.

Since starting out, I have upgraded to the T3i and have added some more lenses.

I am waiting till my grandson is a bit older to give him my T3 which is still a great camera as I only used it a year and I will give him the 18-55 lens to go with it and the book.

I hope who ever you give the camera too, they will love getting into taking pictures and remember you fondly when they look back at how far they have come and it was you that got them started.

I can get Canon T3 with 18-55 DC lens for $300. I don't want to spend too much as it is a gift but have concerns about the non-IS old DC lens. Should I spend another $100 for 18-55 IS (T3 with IS lens is $400)? Any other suggestions?
