Reality check:

APS-C is the cheap way, an ancient artefact from film days. When this format was introduced in film days, what a mess it was. I never heard, apart from (some) sport or (some) wildlife shooters, that APS-C was a good thing, never ever.

What we now call FF is also an ancient artefact. More ancient really. And even more cheapskate.

and the irony of it is that the so-called " full frame" was actually chosen because it was half the size of the standard 70mm film

The standard sizes (for roll film) before 35 mm film was 6x9 and 6x6 (cm!).

Among others. you forgot 4.5cm X6cm , 6X7cm and more marginally a 6x8cm and 6x12cm

But there is no such thing as an optimal sensor size. They all have their uses. 1/2.5", 1/1.7", 1", FourThirds, APS-C, FF, medium format.

I am not sure there is much reason to buy a camera with a 1/2.3 or 2.5 sensor nowadays
