How can you be sure you are getting decent lenses second hand? Not damaged?

You did say "second hand"; that's the point of paying a premium for new gear, where you can be sure that it's undamaged, or if there is a problem, it will be replaced without question.

I am very careful with my equipment, for example, I have never needed to clean a lens. It's important to me that my gear looks good as well as performs well. I only ever buy new.

I know from bitter experience that most people do not treat equipment of any sort with reasonable care. My wife was showing my antique telescope to a group of young graduates, and "somehow" it crashed to the floor. Sad fate for an item that survived WW1 and many years amongst my shooting gear.

Having said that, there are companies that deal in "pre-loved" camera gear, and there are good reports of places like Adorama. Their prices won't be rock-bottom either.
