i own both

The 18mm is interesting IMHO for discretion (small) wide aperture for night shot, street photo

In the center the 18mm is really sharper But borders and corners are soft even at f 8 or  f10 AND there is alot of CA

All  in all I think the 18-55mm give globally bettre results

That said I had the same difficulties than you inside with kids due to low contrast

To cope with that you can try : 1/- use different size of the central AF sensor to find which setting for you is best

2/- try always to focus on a contraty area (eye, ear and hair area, ...)

Even in bright light with birds and feathers the X. can be very slow for focus due to low contrast

Another trick : just press the shitter release completely in one time without half press Most of the time it will be sharp don't wait the greeen square

These are small tips that help even if not 100% effective
