Is there a technical reason why it's always a sliver on the right side that shows the crater detail, and the rest of the moon surface is always soft/smooth? Not just the photos in this thread but in all the ones I've seen, and that seems to be the case regardless of the phase of the moon

Its the shadow creeping round the edge of the moon which causes craters to become more defined. This is one reason why its best to take moon pics when its not a full moon.

I took this last night (full moon) & you can see its much more flat looking all over.
