Still struggling

I still struggle to get sharp images at anything other than short focal lengths. I am quite happy with these @ 4.4

Pandanus roots spread to anchor the tree.

Single nut from Pandanus  fruit showing 14 seeds (Macro)

Pandanus nut split to show two seed husks and a bit of white  kernel  (quite tasty)

But.. mid focal length and I lose sharpness:

Ibis - hand help braced against a tree. Not at all as sharp as I would like.

Hand held macro @ about 4' Same result without macro. These crab are very small - the grains of sand give a clue. But really out of focus.

Has anyone any idea what I am doing wrong or how I can get more consistent sharp images?
