DOF Comparison Formula and Results

You'll also have more ability to throw the background out of focus when desired, though you might need to venture into Av mode (rather than full auto) to do so. The LX7's wider aperture narrows the gap, but I'm not sure by how much; it would be interesting if there is a formula out there to quantify that.

I've learned that there is a formula, and it's pretty simple:

aperture x (crop factor / other camera's crop factor)

The crop factors are 1.9995 for the GM1 and 4.5983 for the LX7. So:

The LX7's f/1.4-2.3 would be equivalent in DOF to f/3.22-5.29 on the GM1, and

The GM1's f/3.5-5.6 would be equivalent in DOF to f/1.52-2.44 on the LX7.

Example formula:
1.4 x (4.5983 / 1.9995) = 3.22

So they are very close, though the LX7 gives you a tiny bit more ability than the GM1 with kit lens to throw the background out of focus.

Just for fun:
The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 on the GM1 would be equivalent to f/0.74 on the LX7.
The Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 on the GM1 would be equivalent to f/0.61 on the LX7.
