Just thought I bring this topic to light for those who are looking to buy this lens. Some have said the getting the March and Feb batch has no "ticking sound" it is smooth as butter. I think Canon is on their April batch now and it looks like its a winner as there aren't many complaints about the April batches at all. I called a local shop and they said they will be getting their May batches soon sometime in December-Jan 2014.
I know Canon is going to release alot of new lens in 2014 so I am hoping there is some price drop in Canada for the 24-70mm 2.8 II as it is sharp colorful lens.
Hmmm..I just received my 3rd copy from B&H and was excited when I saw its serial in 062... which as per http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx is June 2013!.
I was so excited after having three returns with the 032 serials that all had the dreaded ticking noise and guess what? The 062 also has the same ticking sound!! :(..but it seems to happen when I zoom out like going back from 70 - > 24 where as 24 -> 70 is buttery smooth...
I just have to live with it I guess and hope it goes away and have no probs in long run..
That's not good to hear the June batch is giving you the "ticking sound" too. WOW what has happened to Canon and their Quality Control Team? I really thought from April onwards the batches were fixed and good to go. This may be a problem with BH Photo and Amazon not sure if they got the bad batches as others have said they had good luck with other companies and local shops. To find out the June 2013 is ticking is not a good start at all. Hopefully not many ppl come forward with this claim.
