What features to look for in a new monitor for photo post-processing?

I've read a bit about IPS and RGB, gamut, etc, and frankly just been overwhelmed... Is there a quick checklist for things/features to look for and what to avoid when purchasing a new computer monitor to be used heavily in photo editing?

This is for an amateur photographer striving to improve and produce professional-quality portrait, landscape and fine-art images. I use Lightroom. Low price is important but not the only consideration.

Thanks
