the 50mm, yes or no?

I have been told and have read that the 50mm prime lens(I happen to have a Canon camera) is a staple and a must have for portrait shots. Recently, however, I have read some articles from a few photographers that they rarely shoot portraits at 50, they try for 70-100 if they can.

I am starting my business and I have no gear. I could use a remote, flash, reflectors, that sort of stuff.

I currently have the Canon 60D and the 18-135 lens.

I was thinking of getting the 50mm as my next lens, but I am wondering if I would make better use of my limited funds elsewhere?

Thanks for any help.
