Yes Daniel, we do certainly do that in real life.

You push shadows and leave NR completely off? I never leave NR off in that situation. The NR is what I was referring to.

Exposing for midtones like Qianp2k suggests is nonsense as it gives no consideration as to where the highlights and shadows fall.

With Canon bodies I keep my eye on the highlights, but I do let them clip slightly if there are deep shadows. You've got some head room on the highlight side, nearly a stop, and that helps hold down noise when pushing the shadows in a single, high DR scene.
