Let's be honest, does Canon even need to respond to the a7r?

Sony has astutely played a "check" to all the other major makers in the industry.

The a7r is a chameleon which will allow all competitor lenses--past or present--with the outlay of a couple hundred dollars for an adapter (or less if you get the Chinese knockoffs). With this move, Sony does not actually have to make any lenses, just bad@ss bodies.

Many people stick with Canon because their line up has just about everything in it and until recently was priced quite reasonably vs peers.

Canon has a robotic factory coming online in 2-3 years that will bring precision to lense making which few will be able to rival. If Canon can get back to making some super bad@ass lenses like a 50mm 1.2 IS at today's prices and tomorrow's precision, it'll have played a "checkmate."

Canon won't care if you don't buy their lackluster bodies with decade old sensors because you WILL buy their lenses and use them on competitor bodies with adapters.

Check and checkmate. That's it.
