The Nikon lens you cite as an example is a great lens. No doubt about that. It's also the exception that proves the rule since it's one of the few Nikon lenses that performs well wide open.

However, the newly released Oly 12-40 f/2.8 is wider at the short end, has more reach at the long end, and will doubtless have higher IQ. With a 50% closer focusing distance (and that across the entire range not focal length limited like the Nikon), the Oly lens will allow you to produce an image with LESS DOF than the Nikon.

wow, this is silly ... who needs shallow DOF for closeup WA images? People usually need selective DOF at larger distances with standard/tele lenses, for isolating a subject from the background. This is where m43 doesn't stand a chance compared to FF.
