I started with a Sony P&S F7 Mavica back in 98 then a F707, H5, H9 then KM7D, A700, A77 and A99. Today I returned to the P&S world with the QX10. I can see how this will present a whole new way of capturing images.

Comments
  • It will fit in a coat pocket or a purse and hang from a belt.
  • You do not need the Cell phone the take a picture, you just need it to see what you are aiming at
  • Battery life is short, 1.75 hours at most
  • The pics stored on the cell phone are reduced to the cell's screen size and are renamed
  • The shutter button is easy the press accidentally
  • Only MP4 videos
  • Only in P mode can you control WB and EV
  • In Superior Auto mode it does MFNR automatically
Some quick snaps, I can't wait to go to the grocery store with this.

thanks for sharing. What's your initial impression? oddball, regretted purchase or excitement when you see the potential? how does the potential differ from having the RX100 or II for example?

they look nice to me, any PP involved ?

Still have not gone out with the thing but I am excited by the potential to put in strange places, well places where a normal camera would be awkward. I was considering the RX100 but this will satisfy me as my Galaxy S4 will suffice for normal shooting were I don't have my DSLR.

thanks for reply.

can you elaborate about where you can see it's application in strange or awkward places?

am curious! Do you mean it can be used more discretly / stealthily?? or that it's so small it can fit in nooks and crannies where another camera cannot fit?

In food markets or similar places, up close and and with framing that would be difficult to accomplish the a larger camera. Also it is more discreet for street shots, no camera in front of your face or even near you.

You are Regressing into a "Snap Shooter"?????

Ed,

Good information... The QX series is a fascinating concept.....

Once the RX10 is delivered, I'll head to Estes Park and then to the Zoo lights to run it through it's paces. I would guess the Steam Engine in Georgetown looks impressive in the Winter.

Your bio is similar to mine: SDM/PM/SR Tech Resource.....

thanks.

am curious to know how it can be used more discretely, because of it's size and form? or because it's actioned remotely? How do you hold it and activate it at the same time? if it's separate from the phone, i mean? can you use it successfully without the phone as a screen and actuator?

I like the idea of a stealth camera but can't quite get my head round this.

thanks for your info!

I just went to Mike's Camera and they told me the QX10 is such a hot seller they can't keep them in stock, currently have 34 on order.

The following pictures had no post processing other than to crop some.

All three, not exactly small 6 cm diameter X 4cm deep small enough that it is not as noticable as the smaller pocket cameras, will fit in jacket pocket and pants depending on the pants or hang from clip on a belt loop. the shape makes it unobtrusive with your hand wrapped around it. But mostly it is the remote part, place a few feet away and fire away (I have actuated the zoom and shutter from as far as 20 meters, I'm sure that is not the limit)
How do you hold it and activate it at the same time? if it's separate from the phone, i mean? can you use it successfully without the phone as a screen and actuator?
Most of my shots are using the shutter button and zoom switch on the QX10 not the phone. As you imply that takes a little coordination if the QX10 is in one hand and the phone in the other. I only use the phone for framing, this is stealthy as you are not looking at the subject, you are looking at the phone and the phone is not aimed at anyone, be sure to turn off the sound.
I like the idea of a stealth camera but can't quite get my head round this.
One other note, the QX10 comes with a wrist strap, it is basically worthless as just putting your arm down the strap falls off. I attached a PeakDesign wrist strap to the supplied strap, that provides a 40 cm lead which allow you to put the QX10 in your coat pocket and still have a good range of arm motion.
thanks for your info!
