Re: Is the Sony 16mm/F2.8 really that bad?

I take the middle road on this. No, it's not a great lens and many of the negative reviews I've seen are pretty accurate. My copy doesn't seem to be decentered and still has some smearing at the corners at f/5.6 and f/8.

It does to pretty well stopped down, is sharp at the center wide open, it's not expensive new and a great deal used (USD $120-150), and it's tiny.

I put off getting one for a long time. The bad reviews made me second guess my decision to get a NEX rather than a Samsung NX camera, which has faster and sharper 16mm pancake that's also very affordable. I recently got one for a backpacking trip, along with the UWA, and have been happy with it. I'm also happy that I read a lot of reviews and went into it with my eyes open, otherwise I would have probably been disappointed.
