Desperate need of camera advice! Canon..older model....recommendations?

Just registered, but have visited this site for years...(advice & tips). Now I need help. Someone stole my camera & 2 lens....from my office. I am crushed. Granted it was a t1i with grip, (dated) but worked like a dream. They took my 50 mm 1.8 and my 70-200 F4l.

I work for our local Rec dept and used the camera to take photos of our kids year round playing sports. I would post these on our Facebook page & website for the parents. We have a beautiful facility with a gym that we open to the public. Apparently, someone slipped in and got it...I did put the word out with my "kids" and know they will keep their ears to the ground. (I have sponsored many, bought shoes for some...been here 11 years and have a great relationship with them.)

My problem is that I am going to have to buy another camera, but can't afford a new one & lens. I have been looking at used cameras (andorama, B & H, amazon) and I have narrowed it down to the 40D, 50D or 60D. My question, because of limited funds here at the holidays (3 kids & tax time) would I be foolish to go with an older model? I see nothing but raves for the 40D & could get one with a couple of good lens in excellent condition....I could try to save up for a better one, but there is so much going on that I need the camera for now...(allstar District & state tourneys that one of our age groups always win).

I do know that with any of the above I named the burst rate will be a welcome advantage! I care nothing for video...never used it. low light picture quality is also a plus....I do take pictures during basketball, but we have a well lit gym with a white floor....plenty bright...(thank goodness!!) Also, I have complete access to courts and football/baseball/soccer fields & track during the season and did find that I rarely used the long end of the 70-200 F4L. For outdoor sports F4 is plenty. In my case, I usually try to get several players in a shot instead of just one....lots of kids on the team and my way of trying to include everyone! lol...

what are your thoughts on a 24-105 L on a crop instead of the 70-200? Like I said, I am on the sidelines and found I didn't need the long end of the 200... Thank all of you in advance....I know my camera was old, but I had been adding to it over the years and babied it...my rec kids live for those pictures! (I print a lot and put on our board in the hall & also in the local paper)
