i don't know what you were looking at but i just compared them at that link @400mm and the 400mm prime is clearly better than 100-400mm it has been proven numerous times that the prime is sharper at 400mm and it is an accepted conclusion by the majority of owners of both lenses

I don't agree with that.  I see something different.  Moreover in actual field use the IS in the 100-400 is going to provide a sharper image handheld.
