Olympus 12-40 easily beats the Canon 17-55 at f/2.8 (but not when stopped down).

I generally find the 17-55 to be very sharp wide open, I did a lot of testing before I bought my lens, my experience with my 17-55 is consistent with photozone's finding, i.e. very sharp wide open, no significant change stopping down.

Looking at your house images, it is also pretty clear that 17-55 is sharper than 12-40 (look at the brickwall unde the smoke funnel). Maybe the issue is that your 450D AF isnt consistently accurate at F2.8, and because 17-55's DOF is shallower than that of 12-40, slight OOF makes everything look worse with 17-55 than 12-40.
