Cheapest available-new CHDK camera
Cheapest available-new CHDK camera
It's tiny, well-made, and runs CHDK nicely... and cost me under $100 when I bought a little fleet for the students in my "Cameras as Computing Systems" course.
Issues? Sure:
- No aperture. It's essentially diffraction limited wide open, and it does have an ND filter, but I'd still prefer a little aperture control.
- Wide end of zoom is much wider than the JPEG shows you -- can easily get a good 24mm equivalent view angle out of a CHDK raw. However, nasty misalignments show if you try to use the full wide raw. Every A4000 has a very dark corner... some worse than others, and which corner is bad varies too.
Anyway, it's hard to find a CHDK-supported camera still available new (it usually takes as long to port CHDK as the camera is available new), and this one's good and cheap. It's not great at any of the categories DPReview lists, but this is a really excellent camera if you need one that is fully programmable -- and even programmable while USB tethered. Great for things like use in UAVs, kites, etc.
