RAW vs JPG formats: When and Why?

I've heard that RAW is the "best" format. I know it takes more memory and because more details are stored the photo can be adjusted in more ways than a JPG BUT do I need to shoot in RAW?

What if I want to publish a photo? (In a magazine) or Print a photo in a large format for wall art?

I prefer not to alter my own photos once shot; with the exception of cropping and perhaps an occasional adjustment to exposure BUT what if I want to sell a pic? Is RAW the only way to go or should I do both?

Thanks for any insight provided!
