Cameras are electronic goods now.

A fast moving fickle market where trends come sweeping in and clear away the established order.

VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, Walkman, iPod, iPhone, PC, laptop, iPad. Blackberry, Nokia, Eriksson, IBM, Compaq, Atari, none of the losers saw it coming....I suspect several camera manufacturers will be caught napping too.....

That's the problem, if cameras return to being specialised non-mass market products.  The electronic sheds and discount stores will no longer be interested in stocking and selling such products and specialist photo store has largely been forced out of business already.  So distribution will be the key and it will probably have to revert back to the model in the '70s and '80s, assuming anyone is brave enough to re-open a camera shop.  Or be able to find anyone under 60 with the photographic knowledge that is also interested in working in one.
