I am going to buy the same lens too so I am trying to figure out if this would affect in any way the lens.

Here is my 2 cents on it: if the lens seems harder to zoom also, Canon might have changed the weather sealing O-Rings inside the lens. This gaskets move as you zoom in or out and the sound you hear could be the gasket moving on the plastic. You should also be able to feel it ( feel the tension in the zoom ring ease every time you hear this clicks). If this is the case then it is probably an improvement Canon made to the newer batch ( tighter gaskets will mean better weather and dust sealing) and the ticking will also dissapear after a bit of wear from the O-ring.
