I just received my replacement from B&H and as expected it had the same ticking while zooming..darn!!!

Its a 032... serial #. I am not sure what to do now..Just return and wait for sometime till this batch clears out and hoping get a new batch 04....+ that folks have reported zooming smoothly? But then I wont get the $1699 deal by then..aarggh

I can live with this ticking but paying that much money I just want to be sure this is not something that would become a major issue after 1 year warranty expires...I am having a trip to cancun end of nov. and was hoping just this lens + 5dIII wud do but now that doesnt seem to be the case

Thanks

Anand,

Sorry to hear about this. There are those who have switched out 5 lenses from B&H over in the CanonRumors Forum and still getting stuck with the "032" batch which I also returned to Amazon. It seems all 2012 units are good as well as the April batches. I would ask them to swap it out again because I would hate to lose the rebate. It will be all worth it once you gets tick free one like so many of us. Keep us all posted.

dsc888,

Looked at my ticking 24-70 when I got home and sure enough it is a March date. Wonder what they are doing with all the ones being returned. I'm aftraid if I ask for a replacement I'll just be sent one somebody else has returned. Canon doesn't seal the boxes so there is no assurance my next one won't be someone elses reject (for that matter maybe my current one was).

All the retuned units CANNOT be resold as new. That's the good part about buying from a authorized retailer. They can only be resold as refurbished. So I might wait a little for them to sell off the older stock and ask for a replacement. B&H will most likely return the customer rejects to Canon who will then sell them as refurbs once they are cleaned and tested.

That is how I hope they handle them.  However since Canon does not seal lens boxes and unlike Canon cameras, lenses don't have a date/time setting that will tip one off that the camera has been used previously then how would a person know for sure.  B&H 30 day return policy requires "items must be in new condition, unregistered, and include all packing material, blank warranty cards, and accessories."  Seems like everything necessary to resell them as new if they like.  While I think B&H is the best, I do recall posts here a year or so ago where people were asserting they ordered new items and that wasn't what they received.

I guess I will take your advice and wait another couple weeks and try a 2nd lens that is hopefully past the #302 and a smooth non-ticker.  From the CanonRumors site and the guy on his 5th one, I recall he says he keeps asking for a different dated/run lens but they keep sending him the ticking 302 ones.
