John Miles... is the FZ50 upgrade finally here?
I know you have spent years searching for a high quality bridge camera that could replace your now dated FZ50. You have rejected the idea of using an ILC, and you don't really want an FZ200, which seems like the obvious choice for many others.
Sony has just announced a new high quality bridge camera that might come close to what you are looking for. The new RX10 should top the image quality of every FZ camera ever made, due to having a sensor four times larger. The zoom range isn't as great, but the larger sensor should allow for much more aggressive cropping that would still provide a 420mm reach with more resolution and better image quality than an FZ50.
But, it's not perfect. It still lacks a few things that made the FZ50 so endearing:
- It lacks the internal zooming, and manual zoom ring
- It is slightly heavier, but a little bit smaller
- It costs quite a bit more, even accounting for inflation
But the image quality should be much better, and it would allow you to move into the new millennium with a modern sensor, HD video, a really nice LCD and EVF, USB 2.0, and twice the resolution of your FZ50.
It even has a much more powerful flash, and is weather sealed.
What do you think John? Is this the camera for you, or will you continue to hold out for a FZ50 MkII?
