The average DSLR user is now 55+ years old.

The average mirrorless camera user is an Asian women. Currently, that's the only demographic in which they are popular.

As Nikon put it "In Europe and the U.S. the ratio of mirrorless to SLRs hasn't grown at all, unlike in Asia, where it's quite popular with women because it's light." (Source: Reuters)

It is funny that I was reading Meland's comment in the subway, when I looked up and saw a petite Asian woman, in her early 20s, with a 5D sized DSLR and FF mid range zoom around her neck. I also personally know one who shoots 5D2 and 7D, and a bunch of L lens, including big whites. Exception is the rule.
