NEW 24-70mm f2.8ii Zoom Ring "Ticking" While Zooming

You might very well be right and this may turn out to be nothing more than unfounded fear. But with such great return/exchange policies at Amazon, DPR GearShop, B&H and such, I would not hold onto a lens if I knew early on that it may have a potential issue. If I just found out and I had the lens for a few months, then I would speak with Canon just in case and perhaps send it in for an inspection/repair.

Good luck if you get one yourself. It's an amazing lens. I still love my 24-105 but I will sell it to help reduce the cost of this really expensive hobby
