I'd be tempted to do a test on a ticking lens. Take lots of pictures in succession, focused on a single point (manual focus is probably best). Turn the lens to 24mm and take a shot. Turn the zoom ring until you feel the first tick and take another shot. After several sequential ticks, check the exif to see what focal length the camera reports. If it's climbing towards 70 mm then you can say for sure it's the brush sensor. I'd say it's the brush moving over the gaps in the strip which makes the noise, a bit like when you have grooved discs on a car, the pads make a definite noise when rubbing the disc surface whereas smooth discs don't.

I just did a test with my 8 year old 24-105 and it makes a tick when moving from the long end of the zoom range, it shows 105mm with the first shot and 92mm after the first (and only tick I can hear).

It's performed faultlessly ( now I may be tempting fate here) and no issues.
