Repair or replace? Canon XSi7450D
Oct 22, 2013
Hello all. I am new to the forums but I have periodically lurked here, and have referred to the main site for many years.
I have a non-functional Rebel XSi (450D) that I finally got around to sending back to Canon for service. At one point, with no apparent cause, the camera simply stopped turning on. It was a refurb, but it worked perfectly for me for about two years until it conked out. I'm not sure what the issue is, and I have no electronics or camera repair abilities to speak of.
The camera is currently at Canon's repair depot, sent by my local retail shop. I have received word that the camera will cost about $250 to repair. The estimate did not say what was going to be done, but the guy from the shop said it was mostly labor, so in his experience it is probably replacing the main power board and putting the camera back to factory specs.
So my question for you is pretty simple: do you think it's worth the money to fix it, or would it be better to use the money to go after a new camera? Or maybe I am asking the wrong question – could I get the same work done for significantly less somewhere else? Would it be worth it if I could get it done for less?
I realize this is a largely subjective question; I'm just curious as to what those of you with much more experience than I would do. I'm just a casual photographer, doing occasional street shots and travel photography. I only have the kit lens, so I am not heavily invested in the EOS ecosystem. I know it's quite a good camera for my purposes, and I was quite happy to use it when it was working, but what would get me the most bang for my buck?
I would not be opposed to getting something a bit more compact, but the size of a standard SLR is is not an issue for me. I guess I don't know the market as well as I would like. How much has the technology advanced in the last five years since the XSi came out? Are we light years ahead, or have the changes been incremental?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might have some input.
Michael
