I would recommend Karen Sperling's books and videos

She has 2 books and a plethora of videos out.

I have Scott's video and it's great but there is a lot of filler, IMO. Also, his video is heavy on photoshop specific technique and a little light on art-theory. Karen's work concentrates on both and I find it refreshing to learn from someone who's an artist first and a technician second. I learned a huge amount from Karen that I continue to apply on a daily basis.

One thing that I have found is that it's relatively easy to use smudging to produce an illustrative look but harder to produce a look that models a physical painting. I think Karen's books and videos help tremendously in that regard.
