My opinion having hiked around the dodgier areas of Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe is to take a compact you can slip into a pocket and take plenty memory cards. Ideally, use a compact that takes AA batteries. You can get them in most places.

If it gets broken or stolen then just pick up another in Germany. It'll be more expensive because German sales tax is over 15% but you're not going to the ends of the earth. It's more likely that you'll get a theft problem in a Latin country or if there are any of those pesky transient illegal immigrants roaming around.

I take photos for my own pleasure. I write books for my own pleasure too. If people buy them then fine. If not then I don't really care. The fun was in writing them. Income is just icing on top of the cake.
