You're still talking about the RX10, right? You can go a few stops down from f/2.8 on that 1" sensor without worrying about diffraction.

A few stops? 1 stop down is f/4 and 2 stops down is f/5.6. I believe diffraction is already affecting the sharpness from f/5.6 for a M43 sensor, which is twice as big as the 1-inch sensor in the Sony. Diffraction is a function of sensor size.  F/2.8 is not the same on a small sensor camera as on a larger one, except it provides the same shutter speed, but not the same when you consider other IQ issues.
