The Sony RX10 has the same 20mp sensor as the Sony RX100 II that is well thought of and it has an equivalent 24-200mm f2.8 Zeiss lens. Having a package that includes the equivalent of a 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 makes the $1200 price easier to take.

$1200 RX10

$1000 GX7
$1300 12-35mm f2.8
$1500 35-100mm f2.8

You can't change the lens on the RX10, but a lot of m4/3 people would be quite happy, I think, even if all they had were the 12-35mm and 35-100mm for their m4/3 camera.

Anyone who is willing to buy a GX7, 12-35 and 35-100 isn't going to be happy with the RX10. These are completely different cameras. Anyone who guys the 12-35 and 35-100 is going to have other lenses. The RX10 may be a better choice for some users, but to suggest that people are making a choice between these to options is a bit crazy.

Is it really? I'm currently the owner of a GH3 along with the 12-35mm and the 35-100mm and am considering swapping it for the RX10 if the lens quality is up to scratch. The main thing I'll miss about m43 is the 25mm and 7.5mm fish eye that I also own, but those have both seen less use since I got the premium zooms.

I might have to get a camera with a slightly longer standard or maybe a slightly wide standard and short tele depending on budget/chosen system purely so I can still do studio work but it definitely wouldn't be my main camera.

Well, let me start over. I was typing this up looking at used values for the 12-35 and 35-100, but the new prices for those lenses in Tokyo are $450 and $500 less that the US. You can probably get more for those used than I expected. (12-35 $770, 35-100 $950 and GH3 $900, GX7 $760 for those curious) The RX10 is still around $1200. So twice the price rather than three times.

Say you sell yourself and you can get the RX10 and have $1400 left over. Enough for a low(mid?) end SLR and a 85mm f1.8 or something. Not enough for a wide too.

To be honest the comparative prices of the two kits isn't the main reason for me swapping over. If I i did however want to reinvest the full amount back into cameras i might go for the sigma compacts, I'm really not a fan of SLRS, especially the low end ones. I just hate the viewfinder. Might even save up a bit extra aand get the new Sony a7 with a couple of nice legacy primes.

What are you expectations of the lens on the RX10 vs the two Panasonic zooms? Even if the Panasonic lenses don't match the best comparable lenses, do you expect a super zoom to exceed them? What do you gain out of making this swap? Just trying to understand your reasoning.

I'm not expecting the RX10 to be better than the panny gear, I'm expecting it to still be acceptable for my needs whilst being smaller, 400g lighter and more convenient. I do a lot of travelling and mountaineering with my cameras so these are very big factors for me. I initially invested in m43 as an upgrade from p&s and have since stayed with it because it is the lightest way of covering 24-200mm with acceptable quality. With the RX10 come along chances are that's no longer the case. I use zooms for convenience and having to not even change zooms makes them even more convenient. I know I could also just get a super zoom for the panny but it wouldn't be weather sealed and at the long end would have a smaller real aperture.

On m43s you have a number of wide normals, the upcoming 15mm, 17mm, 19mm and 20mm and a couple affordable short teles, 45mm and 60mm as well an expensive 75mm which you could mostly cover by selling your FE and Panasonic depending on the exact lens choices. The 30mm makes a slightly long standard, unfortunately the only choice I know of.

I could stick with m43 and use more primes but if i did that it would be purely for my slower more methodical types of photography and likely in a very different package to what i have now. Maybe something like an epl-5 with a 20mm and 45mm.
