AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G lens to be announced tonight.

See here:

And here:

So it's a 58mm, F/1.4 maximum aperture (9 blades), supposed to be excellent even wide open, 1789 euros / 2400$ supposed street price

I'll go out of my way and express my opinion (as a purely FX shooter)

This is (for FX) a stupid focal lenght, in my opinion (which you may or may not agree with)

Too longish for a general purpose lens, too short for portraiture (on FX)

It's also pretty expensive. (but we're starting to get used to these prices, aren't we?) I'm pretty sure it will be much better than the current 50mm F/1.4 G (which I used to own... and it's soft and lacking contrast wide open) but for 33% less money you could get a Sigma 35mm F/1.4 Art AND a Nikkor AF-S 85mm F/1.8 G and you would end up with both an excellent general purpose lens and an excellent portrait lens, both of which give excellent performance straight from wide open. (I know, I own both)

It may probably appeal to DX shooters where it would give a FOV suitable for portraits... but then again... how many DX shooters are willing to spend that much money on such a specialized lens? I'm betting not too many.

Scratching my head on this one...
