You'll be able to get good results with either of the lenses you mention. It probably comes down more to your shooting style than one lens being better suited than the other.

I was in Finland a few days ago taking aurora photos with my 16-35 f/2.8L and 5D mark III. The speed of the lens was fine, however for some of the shots I would have liked to have an even wider angle than 16mm. Other shots I took at the 35mm end of the range, and in a couple of cases I even switched over to using my 24-105L.
