Hopefully Sony realizes they're at least "a step behind" the best of C/N in AF speed. In some ways they might not care: their main target market seems to be the P&S/bridge "graduates" who would still be impressed with whatever they get (I can imagine that nobody who hasn't tried some of the leading edge bodies would know what they're missing).  But you're right: it's speculation. Sony's theoretically in a good position, being the manufacturer of most (if not all) of the components of their cameras - so in theory they're capable of making changes at later points in the development life cycle; let's hope they're constantly focusing on making AF better.
